2014 award nominations available!

The Nebraska Agribusiness Club would like to announce that nomination forms for the Public Service to Agriculture and New Horizon awards are now available.

The Public Service to Agriculture award has been presented annually since 1967.  The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to Nebraska agriculture and Nebraska agribusiness.

The New Horizon Award is an award that recognizes individuals 40 years of age and younger who are upcoming leaders in the agricultural industry.

Nominations for both awards are due by July 15, 2014. Nominations are encouraged from non-club members, as well as club members.  The nomination forms and more information can be found at the links below or by e-mailing nebraskaagribusinessclub@gmail.com.

Master Conservation Nominations are due Feb. 19

bildeThe Master Conservation recognizes long-term water conservation, innovation and implementation; the 2013 Master Conservationist recognition program is currently seeking nominations.

A winner will be selected from each of the three established categories: agriculture, community and youth. Production agriculture includes individual producers, partnerships, and family farm or ranch corporations. The community category is for groups, individual agencies or businesses that have carried out a water and/or soil conservation program for a minimum of two years. The youth category seeks to recognize any individual or group of individuals 19 years of age or younger for their conservation efforts.

Master Conservationist brochures, which include details on the program, are available at local Natural Resources District and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service offices. Applications can also be found online by visiting www.owh.com and clicking on “In the Community” link. Entries are due February 1, 2013.

All entries are judged by members of the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Master Conservationists will be recognized at the annual banquet of the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts, September 23, 2013, at the Younes Conference Centre in Kearney. They will also be featured in the Omaha World Herald in September.

The Master Conservationist program is sponsored by the Omaha World-Herald and the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at UNL.

Celebration Recap from Annual Awards Banquet

Over 120 folks celebrated the accomplishments of the club, while recognizing three Nebraskans for their service and dedication to agriculture at the Nebraska Agribusiness Club’s 46th annual awards banquet November1st at Hillcrest Country Club in Lincoln.

A dynamic jazz duo, Jim Williamson and Wes Stebbins played great, upbeat music — there were a few couples were ready to start cutting a rug!

Club members, LEAD fellows, partners in agriculture, as well as friends and family enjoyed a terrific evening! One member said, “It was a distinct honor and pleasure to be present.”

The 2012 honorees for Public Service to Agriculture were Lisa Lunz of Wakefield and Alan Tiemann of Seward. Dawn Caldwell of Edgar was the first ever recipient of the New Horizon Award.

Lori Luebbe, Nebraska Soybean Association, shared many thoughtful words as she explained Lisa Lunz’s passion for youth and agriculture.

Don Hutchens, Nebraska Corn Board, said, “If 90% of leadership is showing up, we can always count on Alan Tiemann for 150%”

Drew Guiney, Nebraska Soybean Board knows Dawn Caldwell will continue to make a positive difference for agriculture in Nebraska as her years of involvement and experience grows!

Nebraska Agribusiness Club To Honor Three Agriculturalists Nov. 1

Three Nebraskans will be awarded for their service and dedication to agriculture at the Nebraska Agribusiness Club’s 46th annual awards banquet November1st at Hillcrest Country Club in Lincoln.

The 2012 honorees for Public Service to Agriculture are Lisa Lunz of Wakefield and Alan Tiemann of Seward, and Dawn Caldwell of Edgar is the New Horizon honoree, according to Mat Habrock, chair of the Club’s Awards Committee.

Habrock said the awards banquet is open to the public. Tickets are $25 each before October 22nd and $30 each after October 22nd through the day of the banquet. Lisa Lunz, and her husband, Jim farm north of Wakefield, Nebraska raising no-till corn and soybeans.  Lisa is a graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and a member of LEAD XVII. Lisa is serving her final term on the Nebraska Soybean Board with a total of 12 years served.  She has served as the research committee chairman, secretary and the Board chairman from 2010-2011.  In addition, Lunz is the Soybean Board representative to U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance and the Alliance for the Future of Agriculture in Nebraska (A-FAN) communications committee.  Throughout the years, Lisa has often shown her passion for youth and agriculture education.  She has served as her community 4-H leader and involved with the Soybean educators, Ag Sack Lunch program, UNL Soybean research projects, CommonGround, and Ag Pen Pals.  In addition, Lisa is very involved with the Wakefield School Board and her church.  Lisa and Jim are also the proud parents of three children: Kristina, a recent graduate of Doane College;, Keri, a sophomore at Midland College; and Jacob, a senior at Wakefield High School.

Alan Tiemann, and his wife Lori, became the second generation to return to production agriculture when he began farming with his parents in 1978. Alan is fortunate to have their son, Dan, and his wife Casey, return to the farm making it three active generations of Tiemann’s farming together.  Their operation is a row crop farm raising corn and soybeans.  Alan began his career in public service to agriculture serving on the Seward Farmers Cooperative and Ruby Farmers Cooperative Board of Directors from 1986 to 1994.  He has also served on the Nebraska Grain Sorghum Board, serving as president from 2001 and 2002.  Tiemann also represented the Board on the U.S. Grains Council Executive Committee.  In 2003, he began his current tenure on the Nebraska Corn Board. Alan was elected by his peers to serve an unprecedented three terms as Chairman of the Board. Alan again returned to activity on the U.S. Grains Council’s action teams, and was elected to serve on the Board of Directors from 2006 to 2012.  In addition to their son Dan, Alan and Lori also have a son, Brian, who is employed as an architect in Chicago.

Dawn Caldwell, her husband Matt and two children farm in Edgar Nebraska on the family farm passed down from Matt’s grandfather.  Half of their farm is devoted to row crops and farmed with Matt’s brother, and the other half to pasture for their cattle.  Dawn received an Animal Science Degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1994, and is a member of LEAD CLASS XXIV.  Currently Dawn works as the communications manager for the Aurora Coop, previously holding the position of livestock specialist for the Coop.  Prior to her time at the Coop, Dawn worked for the University of Nebraska Extension service for three years before taking a job with an independent feed company.  Dawn is involved in the Alliance for the Future of Agriculture in Nebraska, a CommonGround Nebraska spokeswoman and volunteer, a member of the Nebraska Beef Council Board of Directors and active in the Red Angus Association of America.

2012 Omaha Agri-Business Leadership Award is presented to Dr. Allen G. Blezek, PhD

Nebraska Agribusiness Club member, Dr. Alan Blezek, received the 2012 Omaha Agni-Business Leadership Award at the Annual Banquet.

Dr. Blezek was nominated by Larry E. Sitzman and supported by a number of company representatives in the Omaha/Lincoln area.

Dr. Blezek served as the director of the Nebraska LEAD Program for 25 years and during that time participated in international programs in over 90 countries. While at the University of Nebraska, Dr. Blezek was recognized for a number of awards including the Distinguished Teaching Award and Distinguished Educational Service Award.

On the service side, Dr. Blezek served on the Nebraska FFA Foundation Board, Nebraska Ag Relations Board and the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee.

Dr. Blezek accepted the award and gave tribute to Omaha as a great city with a rich history of Agriculture and Agri-Businesss. He thanked his supporters who gave graciously to the Nebraska LEAD Program and thanked the audience for keeping Agriculture as a vital economic driver for the State of Nebraska.

Nomination Guidelines are as follows:

  • Up to two persons will be selected to receive the Public Service to Agriculture award at the annual banquet each year. Consideration will be given to selecting one honoree from theLincolnarea and one from greaterNebraska.
  • Up to one person will be selected to receive the New Horizon award at the annual banquet each year. Consideration is only given to those individuals 40 years and younger.
  • Up to one posthumous award may be presented, allowing for a total of up to four awards in years when this is done. The posthumous award recipient may be from anywhere inNebraska.
  • Consideration will be given to selecting honorees that represent production agriculture, agribusiness and other agricultural organizations, including but not limited to, the areas of education and research, agricultural finance, conservation, marketing, news media, government and work with farm youth.
  • Honorees are required to attend the awards banquet the evening of November 1, 2012.
  • Award nominations shall be considered for a period of three years from the date of the nomination.
