Club Tour 2013 {Nebraska City}

The Nebraska Agribusiness Club Tour was a success! Thank you to those who were able to join us.

The day started out heading East from Lincoln to Nebraska City. The first stop was the Kregel Windmill Factory Museum. The museum just opened to the public this past April and was a great display of the Kregel family’s business of water-pumping windmills. For more history, click hereDSC04056 DSC04059 DSC04058

Next the tour took us to the Arbor Tree Farm where we had a Renewable Fuels Tour  and completed an Awesome Adventure, much like an Amazing Race competition. We were able to learn about wildlife, the farm, the greenhouse and more during this adventure.DSC04066 DSC04068 ??????????????????????????????? DSC04071 DSC04072

Kimmel Orchard and Vineyard hosted the group for lunch where were given a great intro on their history and their business, as well as a hayrack ride and wine tasting/apple barn tour. DSC04073 DSC04074To see all of the pictures from the tour, see our Facebook photo album.

Distillers Grains Cookies

On the Nebraska Agribusiness Club Tour, club treasurer, Gerri Monahan shared sample of cookies made from distillers grains. This was very fitting as we had just toured the ethanol plant where distillers grains are produced.

However, the distillers grains that Gerri used in the cookies were actually made from wheat distillers that are a food grade quality.

Distillers grains are often utilized as a high protein supplement in livestock feed. However, distillers grains are suitable for human consumption if you begin the process with human grade grain, and observe food quality standards throughout the process.

If you can obtain any of these, here is the cookie recipe from Gerri:

1 3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup DDG
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter (softened)
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
1 package chocolate chips
1 cup nuts

Heat oven to 375. Stir together flour, baking soda and salt. In large bowl, beat butter, sugar, brown sugar and vanilla until creamy. Add eggs, beat well. Gradually add flour mixture, beating well. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts. Drop by rounded teaspoons onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8 – 10 minutes. Cool slightly and transfer to cooling rack.

Ethanol plant, winery tour a success

The Nebraska Agribusiness Club tour on Monday was a fun, educational day for members and guests!

The group left Lincoln around 1:30 pm and went to the first stop: E Energy Adams. E Energy Adams, LLC was organized in 2005 for the purpose of developing, building, and operating a dry mill ethanol plant in southeast Nebraska.

The group toured the plant, learned about the local economy and corn production, got to see and taste distillers grains and view the inner workings of the plant.

E Energy runs seven days a week, but is most busy during harvest. During that time, they will unload 200 trucks of corn. Per year, the plant produces 60 million gallons of ethanol. They sell wet, modified (partially dried) and dried distillers grains as livestock feed, as well as CO2 for the food & beverage industry – all as co-products from ethanol production.

After E Energy Adams, our next stop was at WunderRosa Winery near Roca, Nebraska. The winery opened in 2009 offering four wines and have added new ones every year since.

When we arrived, we split the group into three smaller groups and toured the vineyard, wine-making facility and wine tasting facility.

We had a great day and learned a lot about the diversities of Nebraska Agriculture. Thank you to E Energy Adams and WunderRosa for the excellent tours. Our next meeting will be August 20 – more details to come!
