Club learns about genomics, GeneSEEK in Lincoln

Club members and guests heard from Abraham Oommen at the April Lunch -n-Learn meeting. Oommen is a co-founder of GeneSEEK. GeneSeek provides comprehensive agrigenomic and veterinary diagnostic solutions and services for the agricultural biotechnology industry.

March meeting featured Nebraska Department of Agriculture Assistant Director

Bobbie Kriz-Wickam, assistant director of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture spoke to the club at Monday’s meeting at the Northern Lights Hy-Vee in Lincoln.

Bobbie covered the structure of the department – At Work for You, At Work for Agriculture, At Work for Nebraska.  She also covered more specifically their work in ag promotion development which includes working with youth, livestock county friendly counties and the new consumer-focused publication that is scheduled to come out during National Ag Week.

Dean of Extension shares areas of focus, new outreach

At the Monday meeting of the Nebraska Agribusiness Club, Dean of Extension, Dr. Chuck Hibberd, gave a great insight to the way Extension Educators are helping the agricultural communities across the state.

Hibberd first shared about the role of the county agent in 1953 and how it looks a little different today in 2013 as an Extension Educator. The tools of the trade have changed for these educators as well.IMG_1018

He noted six areas that the Extension program are trying to focus on: Beef; Child and Youth; Crops for the Future; Entrepreneurship; Food, Nutrition and Health; and Water and the Environment.

February meeting to feature Extension’s new Dean

hibberdJoin us for the upcoming Lunch & Learn Meeting of the Nebraska Agribusiness Club on February 4th, 2013 at the Lancaster Extension Education Center, 444 Cherrycreek Road in Lincoln.

The new Dean of Extension from UNL, Chuck Hibberd, will be speaking. Buffet lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m., with the program starting at 12:20 p.m. Meeting registration, which includes lunch, is $10 per person (unless you have already paid for the inclusive membership).

Hibberd is a Lexington, Neb. native and UNL graduate. He was named Dean of Extension after being director of Extension and associate dean of agriculture at Purdue University since 2007. Previously, he was director of the Panhandle center at Scottsbluff for 13 years.

Hibberd received his bachelor’s degree in agriculture, with an animal science major and his master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Oklahoma State University in animal science and animal nutrition, respectively. He was a faculty member at OSU from 1982-94.

Meeting highlights from Sen. Tom Carlson

Jan7 Sen Carlson (2)The Nebraska Agribusiness Club welcomed a large crowd of over 60 members and guests Monday, January 7th first “Lunch-n-Learn” meeting of the year.

Senator Tom Carlson gave a legislative update to the club about issues for the upcoming Legislature that include: a two-year budget, 1/4% sales tax for roads, state aid for schools, and water & ag issues. Specific bills that will be coming before the Ag Committee are:

  • Animal welfare
  • Corn checkoff structure
  • Brand laws
  • Water management and funding
